Our Mission Statement and Its Implications

Saint Benedict the Abbot Parish is a vibrant family of
believers in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh.
Our goal is to foster liturgy, prayer, service and hospitality
in the spirit of our patron. We are committed to receiving
all as Christ as we strive to grow in faith, hope and charity.

Any discussion about who we are as a parish begins with our Mission Statement. If we dissect it, we see our role as those who bring the message of Jesus to our time and place like St. Benedict did centuries ago. This impacts how we present ourselves, not only on parish property but in the community as well. When we are identified as members of the parish we become its ambassadors. How we act in our neighborhoods, schools and shops counts. Any time an organization, ministry or group becomes territorial or cliquish it undoes our mission. The church is not a club, as Fr. Conroy reminded us during his presentation at the Parish Convocation in September. It is a living body, the Body of Christ. The most important thing we do is give worship to God, so the liturgy has to be the center of all our activities. Everything is supposed to flow from it and lead us back to it. Our relationship to Christ, both individual and communal is developed by prayer, study and reflection. We demonstrate that relationship by our service to others in the spirit of Christian charity, by seeing Christ in them. The Benedictine tradition is to open the doors to any who come seeking assistance. We must do the same.
