Father Sam's Forum
I am delighted to announce that Bishop Zubik has appointed the Reverend Michael R. Ruffalo, as our new parochial vicar. Father Michael is well-known, and in fact will be here today to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at 12:30 this afternoon [June 29]. He returns on a feast day that is not often celebrated on a Sunday, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. Both great apostles, these men are “founders” if you will, of the Church that Jesus charged his followers to build. Neither buildings nor institution, the Church is, in reality, the Body of Christ, the continuation of the mission of Jesus Christ in our time and space.
We are the Church. It is to us that Christ imparted a charge to spread the Gospel. While the apostles and their successors, the bishops, in union with the successor of Peter, our Pope, guide and lead this earthly body, all of us who are baptized receive the ability to offer in Christ’s name, the forgiveness of which the Lord speaks. All of us are called, to be poured out like the wine libation spoken of by St. Paul, offered to the pagan gods, without counting the cost, in lives of humble service to one another.
Parish News:
The bulletin has made mention of some special projects we want to undertake this year. The hall renovation continues throughout the summer and has been generously paid for with donations from the Women of St. Benedict and Ben’s Men. A number of you have stepped forward to offer your time and talents to accomplish this project. The two remaining projects for 2008 are the purchase of a riding mower that cuts hillsides. This piece of equipment will allow our maintenance team liberation from hours with weed whackers to manually cut the hillsides of our property. It also offers the safety that a regular mower does not on hillsides. The second project is the renovation of the Rectory porch and deck. Worn floorboards and steps plus railings that are deteriorating make it unsightly and unsafe. The Finance Council determined that we can’t budget the funds for these two projects in our regular fiscal year plan for 2008-09, so we are asking for your help through a series of special collections, beginning next weekend, July 5/6. We’ll also use some fundraising events that are being planned to offset these costs. See the web page on Special Projects and watch for more about these projects.
Busson Portrait Directories will be with us in July to create a new pictorial directory for the parish. It’s been some years since the last directory and we want to offer a newer one for our growing membership. The company will schedule family and individual photos in O’Brien Hall and at the same time there will be a chance to update your census information and register children for the Religious Education program that begins in September 2008.
